We’re super excited to announce the launch of a brand new beer: WHEN YA GUNNA GET A REAL JOB?
It’s a phrase you hear too often in our industry, where some people see hospitality work as an unskilled stopgap on the way to a “real” job – rather than an often demanding and colourful career, where the team have to be incredible multi-taskers who always put the guest first.
The Bone Daddies crew worked with our mates at People’s Captain to design the beer – which is now available at all our ramen bars.
We caught up with Greg Bateman from People’s Captain about the new partnership.
WHO ARE PEOPLE’S CAPTAIN?
“People’s Captain was born from my personal story. I was very public about my struggles with mental health while I was still a rugby player, and the thing that actually first got me talking was having a pint with my mate.
“It was in that moment that I was honest with somebody else, but also with myself about how I was feeling, and then I went on to go and get the help that I needed.
“People’s Captain has become a mission company that makes beer, rather than a beer company with a mission. People’s Captain exists to make social moments count, but we also donate from the sales of our beers to mental health initiatives across the UK.”
WHERE DID THE PEOPLE’S CAPTAIN X BONE DADDIES PARTNERSHIP COME FROM?
“The idea for the partnership with Bone Daddies came from our first meeting. We met at a festival and there was a real mutual respect for the people who work in hospitality. We wanted to make a beer for these people, from these people. The beer represents all of the stories and the coming together of the people that work tirelessly behind the scenes here at Bone Daddies.”
WHAT’S THE BEER?
“When Ya Gunna Get A Real Job is a 4.5% British lager, and there are some Hellertau hops in there – so very subtle nectar fruits. It’s really crisp and super refreshing, so it’s perfect for spicy food.”
WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM?
“The name When Ya Gunna Get A Real Job has come from everybody’s conversations here at Bone Daddies. The number one thing that has been shared across the group is that people don’t understand that this is their choice of work – hospitality wasn’t a Plan B, they weren’t supposed to do something else. Actually, these guys love working in hospitality and they love Bone Daddies – and they love getting people excited about food.
“We wanted to take those stories and turn it into a positive statement. The illustration on the can – our illustrator Nathan has gone to town! We give Nathan a story and then he goes and does his thing. It’s a person in a suit with a briefcase – somebody that might look like they’ve got a “real job” – but they’re stressed and they’re not enjoying it. Not everything you see on the outside is always as it seems.”
HOW WILL THE BEER SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY?
“This beer will not only be a fantastic beer for people to enjoy alongside the Bone Daddies menu, but also there’s a joint donation from people’s captain and Bone Daddies to support the staff. That will build up over time and it will be to help develop them as people and to give them experiences and to keep them excited about working in hospitality.
“To the Bone Daddies team – thank you so much for being so open and honest and sharing their stories. This is their beer, that they’ve created – and I hope that it does them justice.
“I hope people have a fantastic dinner and enjoy the beer, and know that it’s supporting a wider initiative – as well as being a great lager to go with your ramen.”
